It's collarless, and the sleeves and shoulders are perfectly fitted, and it's the prettiest little thing. I wish I had more like it.
Joann's had a $1.99 pattern sale a couple weeks ago, so I picked up this New Look and thought I'd give it a try.
I made the v-neck with 3/4 sleeves version. I have some black crepe, but first I wanted to try out the pattern with something else, just in case I don't like it. I got 6 yards of this bow-print rayon on eBay for $10.
It's really a great little pattern, this New Look 6028. Instead of having a ton of finishing to do at the end, you do it all as you go so once you sew up that last seam, it's done. It's fully lined, and it could totally be made reversible if you wanted to. All the seams are completely encased. It was easy and fun to sew.
I am on the fence about the finished product, though. Something is not quite right. It fits great, especially across the back and shoulders. The length is good. The sleeves are a little looser than I like. I am unsure about it in this fabric, too. Is it too twee? I mean, everything I make is pretty twee, but this might be taking it up a notch. I also feel like it needs....something. Buttons? Embellishment? I am not ready to give up on it yet so I will have to play around with some options. I do really love this pattern though and will make it again in the other neckline variations and different fabric.
Mike and I are going to see Hunger Games in a minute (second time for me) and then to a suprise birthday party, so no sewing is going to happen today. I hope to have some progress made on my orchestra dress tomorrow. Have a great Saturday!
I think its just the fabric, it reminds me of something Chris would wear. Otherwise the fit looks very faltering.
ReplyDeleteI think its a bit boxy - and for some reason that fabric reads a little frumpy more than twee for me - and I love bows! I think it would be cute with a drawstring at an empire waist or maybe a chiffon ruffle down the front(s)
ReplyDeleteI would add a ribbon around the waistline that tied at the front in a bow ole bow. This might be adding more to the twee but I am all for that!
ReplyDeleteI don't know what twee is but I really like the cardigan you made! Maybe you could try it on over a different outfit and like it better? It's a fun jacket so maybe wear it over something more casual or lighter than solid black?

ReplyDeleteThis looks to me like a jacket that belongs with a dress, maybe a sundress, but something with a lower neckline (slip dress, v neck, or such). Personally, I think it does well with black, just not the high neck dress you paired it with. Probably dating myself, but I still like jacket/dress combos (dress with matching or coordinated jacket). So another idea would be to make a sundress with the rest of your fabric. You did a nice job, don't give up on this jacket. Some black trim might jazz it up a bit; take it to the store with you and lay some different trims on the jacket and see it anything clicks.
